The South African swimming team add fourteen more medals at the African Junior Swimming Championships
Hanim Abrahams’ Championship Record time of 1:11.93 won the 13 year old a gold medal in the 100m breaststroke ahead of teammate Jade Simons (14), who clocked 1:15.15 to claim the silver in the event. The bronze went to Tunisia’s Habiba Belghith in 1:15.70.
Later in the evening, Abrahams made her way to the medal podium again, this time for the silver medal in the 200m individual medley when she finished the race in 2:26.34, while SA’s Rebecca Meder (13) won the title in a fast time of 2:22.62.
Luan Grobbelaar (13) set a new Championship Record in the 200m individual medley with a time of 2:10.49, over three seconds ahead of Egypt’s Omar Adel Abas in 2:13.75 and Algeria’s Moncef Aymen Balamane in 2:16.18.
The gold in the 50m backstroke was won by Carissa van Rooyen (13) in 31.61 ahead of Egypt’s Sara Hossny in 31.79 and Algeria’s Amira Ameziane in 32.32.
Matthew Holder (14) and Jack Oliver (15) were happy with their silver medals in the 100m breaststroke and 50m backstroke, clocking 1:07.98 and 27.62 respectively.
Kiyana Bartleson (16) also claimed silver in the 400m freestyle in 4:29.03 with the gold and bronze going to Egypt’s Yasmin Hasan and Asmaa El Sayed in 4:28.10 and 4:34.70 respectively.
16 year old Bailey Desmarais grabbed the bronze in her 50m backstroke race with a time of 31.12 behind Zimbabwean Robyn Lee’s Championship Record of 29.95 and Egypt’s Engie Mohamed Abu Zaid time of 30.84.
Rafael Zasas (16) scooped the bronze in the 200m freestyle in 1:59.17 behind Egypt’s Mohamed Essam Hegazy in 1:55.51 and Algeria’s Mohamed Anis Djaballah in 1:57.74.
Roberto Gomes (15) added two bronze medals to his tally in the 100m butterfly (59.49) and the 400m individual medley (4:42.44), while Gareth Kemp (16) won the silver in the medley event in 4:42.32.
South Africa is currently second behind Egypt on the combined team scores table with two more days of competition remaining.
