Casablanca, Friday, 23rd August 2019 - Five gold and five silver medals for the South African swimming team as the second last day of the 12th African Games’ aquatics programme came to a close in Casablanca, Morocco, tonight.

Kaylene Corbett made it three out of three by adding the 200m breaststroke gold medal to her tally in 2:29.23, over 6secs ahead of team-mate Christin Mundell in 2:35.30 and Egypt’s Rawan Eldamaty in 2:38.22. Corbett now holds the 50, 100 and 200m breaststroke titles from the 2019 Games.

Mundell also walked away with the silver in the 400m freestyle in 4:22.95.

It was gold and silver for Ryan Coetzee and Alard Basson in the 100m butterfly, clocking 53.70 and 53.88 respectively, while the bronze was won by Morocco’s Yusuf Tibazi in 53.89.

Alaric Basson celebrated a well deserved gold medal in the 200m breaststroke, posting 2:14.21 ahead of Egypt’s Youssef Elkamash in 2:14.83 and Tunisia’s Adnan Beji in 2:15.73.

In the 50m backstroke, Erin Gallagher finished with the gold medal in a hard fought race with the Seychelles’ Felicite Passon. Gallagher touched the wall in 29.05 to Passon’s 29.17; while Gallagher also went on to win the silver in the 100m butterfly in 59.34 to Passon’s bronze time of 1:00.61.

Gallagher, Emma Chelius, Douglas Erasmus and Brad Tandy topped the 4 x 100m mixed freestyle relay in 3:31.24, while the men’s 4 x 200m freestyle relay silver medal was claimed by the Basson brothers, Ayrton Sweeney and Brent Szurdoki in 7:35.13.

During the fourth day of the 7th FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Budapest, Michaela de Villiers and Megan Tully finished the 50m backstroke heats in 27th and 44th place in 30.09 and 31.50, while Ethan Spieker and Kobe Ndebele came in 50th and 54th in the 50m butterfly in 26.06 and 26.20, respectively.

Spieker also swam the 4 x 200m freestyle relay with Matthew Bosch, Luca Holtzhausen and Henre Louw where they touched the wall 10th in 7:32.35.

In the 400m freestyle, Dune Coetzee finished 11th in 4:15.29 ahead of Hannah Robertson’s 35th place time of 4:27.81, while Michael Deans and Matthew Sates took on the 200m breaststroke and ended 32nd and 37th in 2:20.46 and 2:21.55, respectively.

Rebecca Meder concluded the 200m individual medley heats in 10th place, clocking 2:16.19, with team-mate Tailyn Seyffert finishing 21st in 2:18.73.
