Another fourteen medals for the South African swimming team at the African Junior Swimming Championships
The 200m individual medley race saw Kristen Straszacke (15) and Gabi Grobler (16) walk away with the gold and bronze medals in 2:23.60 and 2:25.09 respectively, while the silver medal went to Zimbabwe’s Robyn Lee in 2:23.82.
Grobler also won silver in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:14.55, while Mzansi’s Marna Heymans (16) claimed the gold in a new Championship Record time of 1:12.91. The bronze went to Egypt’s Nada Ahmed Samir in 1:16.25.
Rebecca Meder (13) and Carissa Van Rooyen (13) finished the 50m freestyle in 27.43 and 28.34 and took home the gold and bronze medals respectively, with the silver going to Egypt’s Maiar Ahmed Farouk in 28.22.
Michael Houlie was fast in the 200m breaststroke race, touching the wall in a new Championship Record time of 2:22.41 ahead of Egypt’s Fares Mohamed in 2:22.57 and Tunisia’s Adnen Beji in 2:23.39.
It was silver and bronze for Bailey Desmarais (16) and Lesley Blignaut (15) in the 50m butterfly in 28.74 and 28.90 respectively. The gold in the event went to Zimbabwe’s Lee in a new Championship Record time of 27.98.
The girls finished off the evening with a silver medal from Dune Coetzee (13) in the 50m butterfly with a time of 29.33, while the gold and bronze were claimed by Egypt’s Hala Ayman Al Saye and Yassmina Fahmy in 29.26 and 29.41 respectively.
The boys went on to win a further three silver medals in the 200m individual medley, 50m freestyle and 200m butterfly.
Gareth Kemp (16) finished the medley event in 2:11.58, while Rafael Zasas (16) clocked 24.63 in the freestyle and Roberto Gomes (15) 2:08.43 in the butterfly.
Ma'az Khota (14) won the bronze medal in the 50m freestyle in 25.21 with the gold and silver going to Egypt’s Ziad Mohamed Aabad and Ahmed Khaled Rateb in 24.57 and 24.97 respectively.
The final day of the African Junior Swimming Championships will be held tomorrow.
