After four days of competition the South African swimming team remains on top of the CANA Zone IV Championships medal table
Windhoek, Tuesday, 19th February 2019 - 10 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze medals for the South African swimming team on the fourth day of the CANA Zone IV Championships in Windhoek, Namibia today.

Gauteng’s Lise Coetzee (14) was in top form, adding the 400m freestyle and 200m backstroke gold medals to her ever growing tally, posting new Championship records in both events of 4:37.97 and 2:26.88, respectively, while the silver and bronze in the freestyle race went to team-mate Kelly-Ann Brown (14) in 4:40.45 and Botswana’s Maxine Egner (14) in 5:06.33.

Brown went on to win another silver, this time in the 100m butterfly, clocking 1:08.88 to SA’s Emma Kuhn’s golden 1:07.90 and Mauritius’ Ines Gebert’s 1:09.90, while Kuhn and Gebert finished second and third in the 200m backstroke in 2:30.29 and 2:38.57, respectively.

Kuhn won her second silver medal in the 100m breaststroke in 1:17.69, while Coetzee had to settle for a bronze in the 50m freestyle in 28.36.

Leshen Pillay and Kian Keylock were the gold and bronze duo in the 400m freestyle, touching the wall in 4:29.95 and 4:37.86, while Keylock also won gold in the 100m breaststroke in 1:09.88 and a bronze in the 200m backstroke in 2:24.57.

Cameron Casali (16) walked away with the gold in the 200m backstroke in 2:17.64 ahead of Mauritius’ Ryan Kok Shun (16) in 2:18.80 and Botswana’s Andile Bekker (15) in 2:20.67 and later on won the bronze in the 100m breaststroke in 1:09.86 behind Mauritius’ Oliver Wong Chap Lan in 1:09.06 and team-mate Jakobus Terblanche in 1:09.84.

16 year old Kelsea Munro won the 50m freestyle with a new Championship Record time of 26.95, while Megan Shepherd topped the 100m breaststroke race in 1:19.04 and team-mate Ashton Volkwyn won the bronze in 1:19.86.

Shepherd returned to the medal podium for a bronze in the 100m butterfly, clocking 1:09.88, while 16 year old Lwethu Mbatha won silver in the 200m backstroke in 2:31.18 and Jivall Bodlall (16) won his first medal of the competition, a bronze, in the 100m butterfly in 1:00.42.

The South African mixed 400m medley relay team won the gold medal with a new Championship Record time of 4:28.11, while the Over 15 team also scooped the gold with a new Championship Record time of 4:17.46.

During the second day of the Water Polo Championships, the South African U16 men’s team won both of their matches, claiming a 14-6 victory against Zimbabwe’s U18 team and a 12-2 win against the Namibian Masters.

The South African ladies’ U16 team narrowly defeated Zimbabwe’s U18 team by 12 goals to 9, with the Championship decider to be played tomorrow at 13h30.

In the development section of the tournament, the South African U15 men’s team won their third successive match, beating Namibia 15-0, while the ladies’ U15 team also came out victorious against Zimbabwe’s U15 with 10 goals to 0.

The CANA Zone IV Swimming Championships conclude tomorrow with the Swimming starting at 09h00 and Water Polo at 10h00.
