SSA National Age Groups 2018 - Artistic Swimming
Kingfisher Club hosted the 2018 National Age Groups for Artistic Swimming at the Hillcrest Swimming Pool in Pretoria from 13th to 17th December. The event incorporated trials for the FINA Senior Worlds and the FINA 13-15 Age group competition (both scheduled for 2019), in addition to the regular age group competitions of figures, solos, duets, and teams. Clubs from Cape Town (1), Port Elizabeth (2), East London (2), Durban (2), Johannesburg (1) and Pretoria (1)competed.

In the Open category (15 years and older) Courtney Musson (Aquabear) won gold for figures with Emma Manners-wood (Barracudas) winning the technical solo and Laura Strugnell (Barracudas) winning the free solo. Courtney finished runner-up in both these events. Emma and Laura took gold in both the free and tech duet. Courtney teamed up with Nina Smith (Aquabear) to take silver in the tech duet. Emma and Laura swam an excellent free duet achieving the best score of the competition.

The Junior section comprises athletes aged 15 to 18. Nina Smith won the tech solo from Tayla-Jade van Huysteen (Aquanova), with Tayla-jade winning the free solo. Jess McCarthy (Cygnus) took gold in the figures. Tayla-Jade and Emlynn Spogter (Piranhas) won the free duet.

Competition in the 13-15 age group proved exciting as this group has recently competed at the Comen Cup in Seville. Kaitlyn Doms (Barracudas) won the figures from Xera Vegter Maharaj (Kingfisher). However Xera then won the free solo with Skye Macdonald (Barracudas) the runner-up. Kaitlyn teamed up with Casey Williams to win the free duet.

The 12 and under event proved to be very successful for Aquabear. Rachel Taylor took the gold in figures, solo and duet. Her duet partner Jasmine Witthuhn (Infinity) finished second in figures and solo.

NAG also includes a category for Novices – those in their first 2 years of competition. In the 12&u section Aneesah Lindoor (Aquabear) took gold in figures and then swam with Anisia Kerdei (Aquabear) to win gold in the duet. In the 13-18 age group Nicole Hattingh (Synchronacity) won the figures. Barracudas won the 12u trio and Cygnus won the 13-18 trio.

Winners of the NAG team events were as follows: 12&u team Cygnus, 13-15 team Barracudas, Open technical team Barracudas, Open Free team Barracudas. Barracudas also took gold in the free open combination with Aquabear second and Cygnus third.
