Courses

Coaching Level 1

The Coaches Level 1 Course is an entry level course to swim coaching.

Pre-requisite

Candidates must be in possession of a Learn to Swim Instructors certificate. (minimum of 2 years experiance as a LTS Instructor)

Course Enrollment

Candidates must contact the Provincial E&T Coordinator in the area to make an appointment for their course enrollment. Upon enrollment candidates must produce their:

  • Valid First Aid level 1
  • Certified Copy of their ID
  • X1 ID size photo’s (colour)
  • Course Fee R 4000.00
  • Police clearance that is valid at the time of doing the course
  • Candidates must remember that when the first aid certificate is older than a year, it must be accompanied by a valid CPR certificate.

In turn candidates will receive a Course Manual.

Duration

3 Day Training program from 08:00 - 16:30.
Consult your Provincial E&T Coordinator for scheduled dates.

Assessments

Candidates will write a theoretical exam after receiving exam results and have been declared competent they can start logging hours. they will be required to log 20 hrs with a minimum of two accredited and Level 1 coaches (list of mentors will be provided by the affiliate)

A log sheet and lesson plans must be kept and signed off by the mentor after each training session. Logging and assignments must be completed within six months which commences after receiving course results. After logging hours candidate must contact the E&T Coordinator to schedue a date for the practical assessment

Certification

The six months timeframe commences on the day that candidates receive their exam results. As soon as cansiadtes have been declared competent (passing the theory exam) they can start logging their 20 hours. The final stage is for candidates to make arrangements with E&T Coordinator for their practical assessment. Failing this, your accreditation is terminated and you will be required to redo the entire course process. No Refunds are awarded after course commencement.

Once all documents are submitted to SSA they will undergo a moderation and verification process which usually takes up to eight weeks.

Validity of certification

  • As soon as candidates receive their certifcates they must registrator with the Provincial Affiliate
  • Validity of accreditation means coaches must submit 15 CPD points annually during registration
  • Not complying with the above will render the certificate invalid

Registration

Coaches are required to register with SSA annually, through their Provincial Association.

Learn to Swim

The Swimming South Africa Learn to Swim Instructor Certificate provides candidates with essential competencies to teach swimming and water safety to children at least four years of age.

Learn to Swim Instructor Training

The Learn to Swim Instructor Training is the entry level (pre-requisite) for the following courses:

  • Todswim
  • Coaching Level 1

Pre-requisite

  • Must be able to swim at least 25m back survival, 25m side survival and 25m of any FINA recognised stroke
  • Candidates must be in possession of a First Aid Level 1 Certificate (Unit Standard 119567 NQF Level 1)
  • Police clearance that is valid at the time of doing the course
  • Must be 18+ years of age
  • Matric Certificate recommended
  • Candidates must remember that when the first aid certificate is older than a year, it must be accompanied by a valid CPR certificate.

Course Enrollment

Candidates must contact the Provincial E&T Coordinator (PE&TC) in the area to make an appointment for their course enrollment. Upon enrollment candidates must produce their:

  • Valid First Aid Level 1 Certificate
  • Certified Copy of ID
  • X1 ID size photo’s (colour)
  • Course Fee of R1800.00
  • No Refunds are awarded after course commencement

Candidates will receive a Pre Course Manual and a Course Program.

Duration

3 day Training program from 08:00 – 16:30.
Consult the E&T Coordinator in your Province for scheduled dates.
On day two candidates will receive a Course Manual which should be studied before commenecing the written exam.

  1. Exam
    An exam must be written at the Provincial Office or at a designated exam centre. Please liaise with your Provincial Education Training Coordinator.
  2. Logging
    Candidates must log 20x hours with a minimum of two accredited and registered LTS Instructors.
  3. Assessments
    A Practical Assessment will be conducted with a SSA Assesor.

The Course Manual is an extension of the Pre Course Modules covered above.

Todswim

This programme is aimed at introducing water safety skills to toddlers from ages of 12 months – 48 months. This course is a generic entry level course for working with children between these ages.

Pre-requisite

  • Candidate MUST be a registered SSA Member to qualify for course registration
  • Candidates must be in possession of the following:
    • Valid First Aid Level 1
    • Learn to Swim Instructor Certificate
    • Police clearance that is valid at the time of doing the course
    • Candidates must remember that when the first aid certificate is older than a year, it must be accompanied by a valid CPR certificate.

Requirements

  • Candidates are required to have two years (two full seasons) LTS instructors experience
  • Candidates must present their Portfolio of Evidence upon registration
  • Candidates must provide evidence that they have been teaching LTS for the past two seasons
  • Candidates must also participate in the practical aspects of the theoretical background supplied in the two manuals that go with the course.
  • During the course the participants will be expected to demonstrate the teaching technique of the 12 swimming skills toddlers can perform

Course Enrollment

  • Certified Copy of their ID
  • X1 ID size photo (colour)
  • Course Fee of R1800.00
  • Copy of a valid LTS Certificate

Assessment

  • Candidates must log 20x hours with a minumum of two accredited and registered Todswim Instructors.
  • 2 x Practical Assessments will be conducted;
  • On the second day of the 3 x day training programme, participants will carry out practical exercises
  • Candidates will aslo write a theory exam
  • After the participant has completed the 20 x hours of logging another assessment will be conducted with an SSA Facilitator/ Assessor

Certification

Candidates who successfully complete course requirements are awarded with a Swim SA Todswim certificate which allows them to only teach from 12 months old to 48 months.

Annual registration

Instructors are required to register annually with SSA, through their Provincial Affiliate, produce a Police Clearance, Certified Copy of ID, Copy of First Aid Level 1 Certificate, 14 CPD points and proof of Todswim Instructor accreditation.
