The 2015 World Deaf Swimming Championships
San Antonio, Friday, 21st August 2015 – The South African swimming team is making big waves at the World Deaf Swimming Championships in San Antonio, Texas.

Peggy de Villiers was first in the water at the Northside Swim Centre and claimed the gold medal and a new Deaf World Record in the 50m butterfly with a time of 28.28. De Villiers set the record in the morning heats but bettered that time with her gold winning performance in the evening finals on Monday.
The bronze in the event went to teammate Cornell Loubser in a personal best time of 29.56.
De Villiers was not done, as she later won another gold in the 50m freestyle with a new Championship Record time of 26.85, a silver medal in the 100m freestyle in 59.05 and bronze in the 200m freestyle in 2:11.93.


Loubser also made the medal podium in the 200m butterfly, bagging the silver in a personal best time of 2:27.02.
On the men’s side, Mark Roach finished 8th in the 50m backstroke with a personal best time of 29.22 and achieved another personal best in the 50m butterfly when he finished 10th in 26.80.
The South African swimming team is currently 5th on the medal standings out of the 25 countries participating with three more days of competition left.
The 2015 World Deaf Swimming Championships continue tonight with Roach racing in the 50m freestyle and the 200m individual medley.
