Day 03 of the SA Level 2 Regional Age Group Swimming Championships
First in the water at the UWC Swimming Pool in Cape Town was Dennis de Villiers (11) who added three more gold medals to his impressive tally in the 100m freestyle in 1:05.90, the 200m individual medley in 2:40.49 and the 100m backstroke in 1:12.55.
The fast 50m breaststroke event lived up to expectations when Luard Elstadt (11), Jonty Couves (12), Ivan van Rooijen (13), Leon van der Merwe (14), Wehan Human (15) and Daniel Redelinghuys (17) all ended in first place, as the ladies who brought home the gold were Nicole Bougas (11), Johanna Freers (12), Lana Janson (13), Cayley Klaver (14), Amy Bellairs (15) and Caitlin Sleet (18).
Janson won her second gold in the 200m individual medley in 2:44.22 and later on walked away with the silver in the 100m freestyle in 1:04.00, while Freers claimed the silver in the 200m individual medley in 2:47.43 and Rooijen took bronze in the 100m backstroke in 1:13.82
Cape Town’s Sleet was also victorious in the 200m individual medley in 2:38.51 and came second in the 100m freestyle in 1:03.28.
Johannesburg’s Ellis Park Swimming Pool delivered more fast times from Mikah Burger (11), Adrian Caldwell (12), Carl Krause (13), Jacques Malan (14), Taahir Essof (15) and Brandon Pillay (17) in the men’s 100m freestyle, while Veronique Rossouw (11), Viktoria Ellmies (12), Chiedza Mtetwa (13), Ashleigh Munks (14), Zantia Bainbridge (15) and Darielle Naubereit (16) did not disappoint in the ladies finals, claiming the gold in their respective categories.
Namibia’s Burger was unstoppable, as he also won the gold in the 200m individual medley in 2:39.77 and the silver in the 50m breaststroke in 38.49.
Gauteng’s Krause also grabbed the silver in the 200m individual medley in 2:37.12, while Malan took the silver in the 50m breaststroke in 33.99 and the bronze in his 200m individual medley category in 2:33.68.
Tshwane’s Rossouw came second in both the 200m individual medley and 100m backstroke in 2:48.93 and 1:18.33 respectively, with Ellmies walking away with the bronze in her 200m individual medley race in 2:50.22 and Munks winning the silver in the 100m backstroke in 1:14.05 and the bronze in the 200m individual medley in 2:43.64.
There was plenty to celebrate for Kyle McKenzie (15)as he won double on the night, clocking 33.92 in the 50m breaststroke and 2:22.31 in the 200m individual medley, while Hannah Robertson (11) was twice luck as well, winning the 100m backstroke in 1:16.43 and the 200m individual medley in 2:44.32.
The SA Level 2 Regional Age Group Swimming Championships in Cape Town and Johannesburg conclude today, as the Durban leg begins at the Kings Park Aquatics Centre.
