A new Championship Record for Zane Waddell and Tatjana Schoenmaker wins gold on the third day of the 30th Summer Universiade in Napoli
Napoli, Saturday, 6th July 2019 - A new Championship Record for Zane Waddell, while Tatjana Schoenmaker brings home the gold, during the third day of the 30th Summer Universiade, taking place at the Scandone Swimming Pool in Napoli, Italy.

In the 100m breaststroke final, Schoenmaker registered her first win of the competition with a golden time of 1:06.42, ahead of Japan’s Mai Fukasawa and Kanako Watanabe in 1:07.22 and 1:07.28, respectively.

Zane Waddell was on point in the 50m backstroke, breaking the 10 year old Universiade Record of 24.63, held by Japan’s Junya Kuga, by shedding 0.09secs and clocking 24.54 in the morning heats. But Waddell was not done, bettering that record time in the semi-finals of the event, posting 24.46 and qualifying first for tomorrow night’s final.

Nathania van Niekerk concluded the 100m backstroke semi-finals in 15th place with a time of 1:02.80 and will now be preparing for Monday’s 50m backstroke race.

In the 200m butterfly morning heats session, Eben Vorster finished 19th in 2:01.33, while Alaric Basson raced to an overall 20th place in the 200m breaststroke in 2:15.67.
