Doping Control

The Government of South Africa has signed the WADA declaration and FINA has signed the WADA Code. The implication is that Swimming South Africa is bound by the Code, and subscribes to it. All athletes are expected to understand and comply with the FINA doping control rules. Ignorance is not accepted as an excuse and penalties for positive testing has the potential to destroy careers. Athletes are encouraged to take this matter very seriously, and to check with a medical practitioner, who has experience in the sport industry, before taking any supplement or medication.

Attached are various documents that athletes falling under the jurisdiction of FINA should read:

  1. Athlete Information (TUE Exemption Guidelines) (114)
  2. 13 Steps to Drug-testing (128)
  3. Doping Control Location Form (85) – Athlete Information and Training Schedule
  4. WADA Prohibited List

All location forms are to be sent to Swimming South Africa, attention Jade Fourie.

Therapeutic Use Exemption

Please read the Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) Forms very carefully, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact SSA directly (Contact Mr Rushdee Warley, Performance Manager).

Any member who is taking medication that contains any banned substance for any chronic illness or condition, must complete TUE documentation. (To check if any substances you are taking are banned, please refer to the South African Drug Free Sport website (www.drugfreesport.org.za)

(Pls Note: The FINA "Declaration of Drug Use" document is no longer valid)

Clause 3.0 of the document Athlete Information (TUE Exemption Guidelines) (89) explains when to use the TUE Standard Application Form (75) and when to use the TUE Abbreviated Application Form (95).

Any athlete who competes nationally or internationally should comply with the FINA TUE process if using some banned substance. Forms are to be sent to Swimming South Africa attention Mr Rushdee Warley.

SSA will submit your TUE to SAIDS or FINA as required, to undergo an approval process. Once a response is received from these organisations, SSA will inform the athlete. Please note that by filling in a TUE, you are not automatically granted exemption, your application may be declined.

TUE’s, if granted, are valid for a fixed period, and it is the athlete’s responsibility to ensure that the TUE is renewed before the time period expires, in order to keep the validity of TUE current.

A certificate of approval, once received, must be carried by the athlete at all times, at domestic and international competitions.

The relevant TUE forms:

  1. TUE Standard Application Form (83)
  2. TUE Abbreviated Application Form (95)
  3. TUE Questionnaire for Application Exemption: Ritalin usage (82)
  4. Criteria for Beta-2 Agonists (95)
