Learn to Swim

The Learn to Swim Instructor Training is the entry level (pre-requisite) for the following courses:

  • Todswim
  • Coaching Level 1
  • Ocean Splash and Rural Splash
  • Splash Polo
  • Synchro Fun, etc.

Purpose

The Swimming South Africa Learn to Swim Instructor Certificate provides candidates with essential competencies to teach swimming and water safety to children at least four years of age.

Pre-requisite

Must be able to Swim at least 50m in any of the 4 Fina recognized strokes.

  • Candidates must be in possession of a First Aid Level 1 Certificate (Unit Standard 254220 NQF level 3) Police Clearance submitted at Practical Assessment.
  • Must be 18+ years of age

Course Enrollment

Candidates must contact the Provincial Liaison Officer in the area to make an appointment for their course enrollment. (enroll two weeks before course attendance) Upon enrollment candidates must produce their:

  • First Aid Level 1
  • Certified Copy of their ID
  • Two ID size photo’s (colour)
  • Course Fee of R980.00
  • No Refunds are awarded after course commencement

Candidates will receive a Pre-course Manual and a course program. The pre course worksheet must be completed and handed to the facilitator at the course on the first day.

NB: Candidates must produce their Police Clearance certificates once they have completed their practical assessments.

Duration

2 x day Training program from 08:00 – 16:30.
Consult your Provincial Affiliate for scheduled dates.
On day two candidates will receive a Course Manual which should be studied before commencing the written exam.

Assessment

  1. An exam must be written at the Provincial Office or at a designated exam centre. Please liaise with your PLO or Provincial Technical Committee.
  2. Candidates must log 20x hours with a certified Instructor.
  3. A Practical Assessment will be conducted with a SSA Facilitator.

Certification

Candidates must complete all requirements successfully within six months of course commencement. Failing this, your accreditation is terminated and you will be required to redo the entire course process. No Refunds are awarded after course commencement.

Once all the course requirements have been successfully completed candidates will be awarded with a Swimming South Africa Instructor certificate that is valid for four years.

Validity of certification

  • Is dependent on annual registration with the Provincial Affiliate
  • Accumulation of 30 points, through attendance of continuous learning workshops
  • Instructors must produce proof of points to SSA after the four year certification period

Registration

Instructors are required to register annually with SSA, through their Provincial Affiliate, produce a Police Clearance, Certified Copy of ID, Copy of First Aid level 1 certificate and proof of Instructor accreditation.

The Course Manual is an extension of the Pre-course Modules covered above.
