SWIMMING SOUTH AFRICA'S LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM

SSA is the official custodian of South Africa's Learn to Swim-programme. We provide the only official accreditation for swimming instructors for toddlers, children and adults. SSA is supporting a swimming nation - we are the force behind a swimming nation.

OVERVIEW OF SSA'S LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAMME

The Learn to Swim Programme (LTS) teaches children to swim for the following reasons:

  • It is a vital life skill
  • It reduces drownings
  • It provides a healthy lifestyle
  • It creates recreation for children from a young age

The Learn to Swim Programme teaches children:

  • Water safety
  • Water orientation
  • Basic swimming strokes
  • Survival techniques

The organisation puts priority on aquatic safety; teaching water safety tips for different aquatic environments first. The organisation trains accredited swim instructors - a tremendous need in rural areas. The organisation helps form swimming clubs so that the programme can become self sustainable.

The Learn to Swim Programme puts a strong priority on children and adults in previously disadvantaged areas and aims to remove the distinction between the haves and have not's when it comes to access to public facilities and the availability of swimming instructors at such facilities.

LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAMME INITIATIVES

We devised the three initiatives because children and adults in South Africa typically make use of three different aquatic environments to enjoy swimming as a sport or as recreation:

  • The ocean.
  • Rivers, lakes and dams.
  • Public and private swimming pools.

STATISTICS ON SWIMMING AND DROWNINGS

About 70% of the South African population are not proficient swimmers. Drowning still accounts for the second highest cause of accidental death amongst children under the age of fifteen.

About 60% of drownings happen in rural South Africa - typically around rivers, lakes and dams. Approximately 95% percent of drowning involves South Africans from historically disadvantaged communities. More than 56% of cases involve children under the age of 15, with the majority drowning within a meter of the edge of the water.

THE LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAMME'S MISSION STATEMENT

SSA LTS aims to make: "Every Child A Swimmer". 2014 is the target date for "Every Child a Swimmer" by then learning to swim while at school should be a norm in South Africa. We believe that this is achievable.
